SPRAY FOAM INSULATION SERVICES

Pure Eco installs spray foam insulation throughout Van Nuys. We use closed-cell and open-cell formulations depending on the application and are direct about where spray foam is the right choice and where blown-in delivers better value.

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation occupies a different category than other insulation products. Where blown-in or batt products add thermal resistance, spray foam creates the air barrier itself. It expands on contact to fill every gap, crack, and penetration it touches, bonds permanently to surfaces, and delivers both insulation and air sealing in a single application. In Van Nuys, where slab-foundation construction is dominant, and the attic carries the full thermal burden of an extreme Valley climate, the targeted applications where spray foam outperforms every other product are especially worth understanding.

WHERE SPRAY FOAM MAKES SENSE IN VAN NUYS HOMES

Attic roofline applications. Van Nuys is one of the strongest cases in the LA area for roofline spray foam, and the reason is straightforward. Many Van Nuys homes have their HVAC equipment, air handling units, and ductwork located in the attic. On a 105-degree Van Nuys day, that attic can reach 150 degrees or more. A cooling system operating inside an unconditioned space at that temperature is fighting a losing battle before it starts: the ducts lose conditioned air to the surrounding heat, and the equipment itself degrades faster in extreme heat. Bringing the attic into the conditioned envelope by spraying the underside of the roof deck with open-cell foam eliminates that penalty. The attic becomes part of the conditioned space, and the HVAC equipment operates in a temperature-controlled environment.

Around penetrations. Van Nuys slab-foundation homes have all their utility penetrations through the ceiling plane into the attic, and decades of added circuits, plumbing runs, and HVAC modifications have created a ceiling plane with numerous unsealed gaps. Targeted spray foam at these penetrations stops hot attic air from moving into the living space through the gaps that surround every pipe and electrical box.

Garage walls and ceiling. The wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the living space is one of the most commonly underinsulated boundaries in Van Nuys homes. The garage reaches extreme temperatures in summer, and the shared boundary with the living space allows that heat to transfer directly. Spray foam applied to the garage side of that boundary delivers meaningful thermal and air barrier performance in a location that is difficult to insulate effectively with batts.

Attic knee walls. In Van Nuys homes with any partially finished attic space or with bonus rooms, knee walls between conditioned and unconditioned space are prime spray foam applications.

Spray foam sealing attic penetrations Van Nuys

WHAT VAN NUYS HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPRAY FOAM INSULATION

Van Nuys is in California Title 24 Climate Zone 9. Spray foam is not typically used to insulate an entire standard attic floor because the cost per R-value is higher than blown-in insulation for that application. It is specified for targeted locations where its air barrier properties and performance characteristics deliver results that blown-in cannot match.

California building code requires that spray foam exposed in occupied spaces be covered with a thermal or ignition barrier. All Pure Eco spray foam installations in Van Nuys are designed to meet current code requirements. Van Nuys falls under the City of LA building department jurisdiction, and spray foam applications that are part of a larger renovation may require permits.

WHAT THE SERVICE INVOLVES

  1. Assessment. We evaluate the specific areas where spray foam is proposed, confirm that surface conditions are appropriate for adhesion, and determine the correct product and thickness.
  2. Surface preparation. Target areas are cleared and confirmed to be dry. Masking is applied to adjacent surfaces.
  3. Application. Our trained technicians apply the material using professional two-component spray equipment. The material expands within seconds, filling the target area and bonding to surfaces. We apply in lifts to ensure proper cure and adhesion.
  4. Trim and inspection. Excess foam is trimmed where necessary for clearance or code compliance, and the completed application is documented.

SPF MATERIALS

Closed-cell spray foam provides R-6 to R-7 per inch and creates a vapor retarder in addition to an air barrier. Appropriate for exterior-facing applications and targeted air sealing locations.

Open-cell spray foam provides approximately R-3.6 to R-3.8 per inch and installs at greater depth for the same cost, making it practical for roofline applications where the goal is conditioning the attic volume.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Project duration varies with scope. A targeted penetration sealing project typically takes two to four hours. A full roofline application can take a full day or longer. Occupants should vacate the sprayed areas during application and for two to eight hours after. We give you a specific re-entry time based on your project.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the roofline application especially worthwhile in Van Nuys?

Yes, particularly for homes with HVAC equipment in the attic. The extreme Valley heat makes the penalty of running HVAC in an unconditioned 150-degree attic severe. Conditioning the attic with a roofline spray foam application can meaningfully reduce both energy costs and equipment wear.

How is spray foam different from blown-in for an attic floor?

Blown-in is the right product for the attic floor, and it is more cost-effective at R-value per dollar for that application. Spray foam earns its cost at the roofline, at penetrations, and at the rim joist or garage boundary, where its air barrier and adhesive properties outperform loose-fill.

Can spray foam be installed with occupants in the home?

No. The home should be vacated during application and for the appropriate off-gassing period. We give a specific re-entry time for your project.

Does spray foam require a thermal barrier?

Yes. California code requires that spray foam in occupied spaces be covered with a thermal or ignition barrier. Every Pure Eco installation meets this requirement.

How long does spray foam last?

Properly installed spray foam has a service life of 20 or more years and does not settle, compress, or lose R-value under normal conditions.
