Crawl Space Insulation in Los Angeles - PureEcoInc

There are a lot of good reasons why people in Los Angeles and Southern California invest in crawl space insulation, and each homeowner’s top priority may differ. But the truth is that, insulating your crawl space brings multiple important benefits to everyone who has it done.

PURE ECO'S CRAWL SPACE INSULATING PROCESS IN LOS ANGELES

At Pure Eco, we offer several specific services related to crawl spaces: installation of new insulation, air sealing, and rodent proofing. Often, these services are combined for a full crawl space overhaul.

As there are different types of crawl spaces and they are in very different conditions, the exact needs of your crawl space in Los Angeles, California may not be the same as everyone else’s (and many houses, of course, may not even have a crawl space – but may need insulation in an unfinished basement.)

But despite the differences from job to job, we can give you a good overall picture of a “prototypical” Pure Eco crawl space insulation project, step by step.

INSPECTING THE CRAWL SPACE

The first order of business is to investigate your Los Angeles crawl space and see how it is built and how much square footage of insulation it will require. We will see if your crawl space is already ventilated or not – or if it needs new vents and additional ventilation.

We will see what condition it is in, and be able to give you a tighter estimate than the initial over the phone estimate.

CLEAN UP AND PREP WORK

Next, as commence that project, we will need to begin by cleaning up and preparing the crawl space for the insulation. First, it may be necessary to eliminate standing or pooling water (and to prevent reentry by extending downspouts further away from the house or suggesting that “wrongly sloped” land near your foundation be re-graded.)

You might also want to consider adding a sump pump and/or waterproofing your concrete. We can help you ensure your crawl space in your Los Angeles home is fully clean and prepped before we put the insulation in.

Sealing for air and to keep out rodents and insects is another key component of the prep work. This may mean plugging holes in the crawl space walls/ceiling with caulk, plywood, concrete patching, or another appropriate product. It may also mean sealing vent covers or openings, sealing rim joists and sills, and sealing around hatchways and other access points.

INSTALLING THE INSULATION

After cleaning up the area and completing air sealing (and if necessary eliminating mold and replacing rotted wood or making other repairs), it’s time to put the insulation in.

If you have no pipes or ducts in your crawl space, it’s possible to simply insulate the ceiling. But if you do have these items in your crawl space in your home, it’s important to insulate the walls as well.

In fact, it’s always beneficial to insulate the walls since this prevents moist outdoor air from getting in and condensing on the cool concrete.

We always install every insulation type in strict accord with all manufacturer’s instructions. And we make sure it is firmly secured and fills in inter-joist/stud spaces. But due to the high odds of moisture and condensation build-up in a crawl space, even (though to a lesser degree) after ventilating it – you’ll also need a vapor barrier.

AC Repair & Replacement Service - PureEcoInc

THE VAPOR BARRIER

To protect your insulation from moisture and the sagging that moisture build-up can lead to, we can install a vapor barrier over your new crawl space insulation.

We can also install a polyurethane vapor barrier on your crawl space floor, and then cover it with sand, to add yet further anti-moisture protection.

We strongly recommend you add a vapor barrier over all new insulation since otherwise fiberglass insulation can get soggy, dirty, and heavy over the years in a crawl space in a Los Angeles home. And without a protection, it could offer a cozy home to rodents and insects. The vapor barrier is what protects your investment in your new insulation and makes it work at its highest possible level.

Thus, vapor barriers are a routine part of fiberglass insulation projects for crawl spaces. A different type of insulation might be able to do without a vapor barrier, but even with a vapor barrier, fiberglass is the more affordable option.

DON'T FORGET YOUR CRAWL SPACE WHEN YOUR UPGRADE YOUR HOME'S ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Unfortunately, the crawl space is the often forgotten component of a full energy efficiency upgrade. Attics come quickly to mind for many, and sealing around windows and doors is seldom overlooked; while installing more energy efficient heating/cooling units is common enough as well.

But it’s easy to forget about that space just below your floor. But the fact is, a poorly insulated or uninsulated crawl space can greatly hamper your energy efficiency goals. Cool air especially is prone to seep through the floor and into the crawl space, then escape out the sides of the house. That makes it more expensive to cool your home in the hot season – and it can contribute to overworking your AC unit.

The impact of a well ventilated, well insulated crawl space can be great. It will save you money but also reduce your energy consumption, which means less carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and other chemicals and gases escaping into the atmosphere during power plant energy production.

Thus, while insulating your attic will improve your indoor air quality, it indirectly improves the quality of Earth’s outdoor air as well!

Keeping respiratory irritants, rodents, insects, mold spores, and high-moisture air out of your living spaces is no small “side benefit.” Indeed, an insulated crawl space has many benefits that go beyond even the energy savings, the environmental benefits, and the increased comfort.

By including crawl space insulation in your overall home insulation and energy efficiency improvement plans, you maximize the positive impacts of your investment. And every time you walk on those now-warm floor boards in the early morning hours, you’ll be reminded of all the good your insulated crawl space is doing!

FAQs

Can crawl space insulation services in Los Angeles help me prevent moisture problems in my home?

Yes, crawl space insulation services can help to prevent moisture problems in your home by reducing condensation and preventing water vapor from infiltrating your home’s interior. Moisture can cause a lot of problems in homes, including mold growth, rotting wood, and other damage. Properly installed insulation can help to prevent moisture from entering your home, which can help to prevent these problems.

Crawl space insulation can also help regulate the temperature and humidity inside your Los Angeles home, which can further prevent moisture problems. Additionally, some types of insulation, such as spray foam insulation, can act as an air barrier, preventing moisture-laden air from entering your home through gaps and cracks in the walls or roof.

It is important to note that while crawl space insulation can help prevent moisture problems, it is not a substitute for proper ventilation and moisture control measures in your home.

What type of material is best to use for crawl space services in Los Angeles?

The best type of crawl space insulation for your home depends on several factors, including your budget, the microclimate in your area, and the type of heating and cooling system you have. Pure Eco can help you determine the best insulation solution for your home’s crawl space based on your specific needs.
