RAT PROOFING SERVICES

Pure Eco provides professional rat-proofing services throughout Van Nuys, combining entry point exclusion with attic and crawl space remediation where contamination has occurred.

Van Nuys has two adjacent sources of rodent pressure that are unusual even by Valley standards. The LA River channel runs along the eastern boundary of the neighborhood, providing the habitat and travel routes that large rat populations require. The Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, over 2,000 acres of protected parkland and riparian habitat, borders the neighborhood to the southwest. Between these two corridors, Van Nuys sits in a zone of sustained rodent activity that originates from two directions and does not diminish seasonally the way populations in areas without protected habitat do.

The postwar slab ranch homes that make up most of Van Nuys’s houses have had 60 to 70 years to develop the roofline gaps, deteriorated vent screens, and eave-closure failures that rats exploit. A gap the width of a quarter is enough for a roof rat to enter, and gaps of that size develop naturally in homes of this age. Rat proofing, the systematic identification and permanent sealing of those entry points, is the only approach that produces a lasting result. Trapping and baiting manage populations, but do not stop new rodents from entering through the same openings.

WHY RAT PROBLEMS ARE SO PERSISTENT IN VAN NUYS

The Sepulveda Basin is a factor that distinguishes Van Nuys from most other Valley cities. The basin’s protected status means that the rodent populations within it are not subject to control, and the animals move freely from the basin into surrounding residential neighborhoods in search of food, water, and shelter. During the dry season, this movement intensifies as natural water sources within the basin become scarce, and roof rats in particular are highly mobile, using the tree canopy and utility lines as travel routes into residential blocks well beyond the basin’s perimeter.

The LA River corridor adds a second continuous source of pressure from the opposite direction. Properties in the central and eastern parts of Van Nuys face pressure from the river corridor, while western properties closer to the basin face the basin-origin population. The residential streets between these two corridors experience pressure from both, which is one reason rat activity in Van Nuys tends to be distributed across the neighborhood rather than concentrated at one edge.

Van Nuys also has an abundance of mature fruit trees throughout its residential blocks. Citrus and fig trees provide year-round food sources that sustain rodent populations at levels that would not otherwise be supportable given the dry Valley climate.

Attic rodent contamination insulation Van Nuys

WHAT VAN NUYS HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RAT PROOFING

Rat proofing addresses the building envelope. Pest control manages the population currently inside the home. Without exclusion work, pest control produces only temporary results because new rodents enter through the same gaps that allowed the previous ones in.

Because Van Nuys is predominantly slab-foundation construction, the attic is typically the primary location for rodent entry and contamination. Unlike raised-foundation homes, where rodent activity may split between the attic and the crawl space, in a slab Van Nuys home, the attic carries the full burden of rodent pressure from the roofline entry points.

WHAT THE SERVICE INVOLVES

  1. Inspection. We conduct a systematic exterior inspection of the home, covering the roofline, eaves, gable vents, soffit openings, and all areas where gaps or deterioration are visible. We also inspect the attic to assess current rodent activity and contamination extent.
  2. Entry point identification and documentation. We document every identified entry point, note the size and type of gap, and explain what is allowing access.
  3. Exclusion work. We seal all identified entry points using materials appropriate to each gap type. Vent openings are fitted with galvanized hardware cloth that rodents cannot chew through. We do not use materials that can be gnawed through or pushed aside.
  4. Attic remediation. Where rodent contamination is present, we can remove damaged insulation, clean and sanitize the attic, and install fresh insulation as a coordinated part of the same project.

Our exclusion materials include galvanized hardware cloth with appropriate mesh size, sheet metal flashing for larger gap closures, and two-component foam used in combination with hardware cloth where needed for a complete seal. We do not use poison baiting as part of our exclusion service.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know if I have rats in my Van Nuys attic?

Common signs include scratching or movement sounds overhead at night, a persistent ammonia-like odor coming from the attic, visible droppings near the roofline, gnaw marks on wood or electrical wiring, and disturbed or matted insulation visible from the attic access.

Does the Sepulveda Basin really contribute to residential rodent problems in Van Nuys?

Yes. The basin’s protected status means the rodent populations within it are not controlled, and roof rats are mobile enough to travel significant distances into surrounding residential neighborhoods using tree branches and utility lines as routes. Properties within a mile of the basin perimeter consistently show elevated rodent pressure.

Will rat proofing stop all future rodent entry?

A thorough exclusion seals all identified entry points at the time of service. Homes continue to age, and new gaps can develop over time. We recommend periodic re-inspection, particularly given Van Nuys’s sustained dual-corridor rodent pressure.

Do you handle attic cleanup after exclusion?

Yes. Attic cleaning, sanitization, and insulation replacement are offered as a coordinated service with rat proofing. Most Van Nuys homeowners with significant contamination do the full remediation package.
