RAT PROOFING SERVICES

Pure Eco provides professional rat-proofing services throughout Santa Monica, combining building envelope exclusion with attic and crawl space remediation where contamination has occurred. Rat proofing is the systematic identification and permanent sealing of entry points. Trapping and baiting manage existing populations, but do not stop new rodents from entering through the same gaps.

Santa Monica’s rodent pressure is driven by different factors than the river-corridor or hillside cities, but it is real, and it is consistent. The urban density, proximity to restaurants and food waste, and the year-round mild climate that sustains rodent populations without seasonal die-off all contribute to a rat population that is well-adapted to the built environment. The city’s aging houses, which include many postwar homes with rooflines, eave closures, and vent screens that have been deteriorating for 50 to 70 years, provide rodent access points. Salt air in coastal Santa Monica accelerates the corrosion of vent screens and metal roofline components, creating gaps that would take much longer to develop in a dry inland city. Overcoming this accelerated decay requires a specialist who uses materials built for the coast.

At Pure Eco, we provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all rat-proofing services. Once we seal your home, it stays sealed. We prioritize your peace of mind with an immediate phone response and a free, no-pressure consultation, complete with a clear, estimate and honest advice. WHY RAT PROBLEMS PERSIST IN SANTA MONICA

The proximity to Palisades Park, the beach, and the landscaped median strips throughout the city creates wildlife corridors that are quite different from the river channels and mountain foothills of the inland cities, but they support comparable rodent populations. Roof rats in particular are well-adapted to the urban coastal environment and use the tree canopy, utility lines, and dense landscaping as travel routes between food sources and shelter.

Salt air is an accelerating factor that is unique to Santa Monica and the immediate coastal cities. Galvanized vent screens in a coastal environment corrode faster than manufacturer ratings reflect because those ratings are developed for typical atmospheric conditions. In homes within a few blocks of the water, vent screens that were installed 20 or 30 years ago may already be perforated or structurally compromised in ways that are not visible from ground level but are obvious during a close inspection. These corroded screens are direct entry points for rodents.

WHAT SANTA MONICA HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RAT PROOFING

Rat proofing and pest control are different services. Pest control manages the population currently inside the home. Rat proofing addresses the building envelope to prevent new entry. Without exclusion work, trapping and baiting do not produce a permanent solution because new rodents will enter through the same openings.

In coastal Santa Monica, the exclusion materials used for rat proofing need to be selected with corrosion resistance in mind. Standard galvanized hardware cloth is appropriate for most applications, but for homes very close to the water where salt air exposure is highest, we select materials that hold up better in that environment.

WHAT THE SERVICE INVOLVES

  1. Inspection. We conduct a systematic exterior inspection of the home, covering the roofline, eaves, gable vents, foundation vents, and all areas where gaps, deterioration, or corroded screens are visible. We also inspect the attic and crawl space to assess current rodent activity and contamination.
  2. Entry point identification and documentation. We document every identified entry point, note the size and type of gap, and explain what is allowing access.
  3. Exclusion work. We seal all identified entry points using materials appropriate to each gap type and the coastal environment. Corroded vent screens are replaced. We do not use materials that rodents can gnaw through or push past.
  4. Attic and crawl space remediation. Where rodent contamination is present, we can remove damaged insulation, clean and sanitize the space, and install fresh insulation as a coordinated part of the same project.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Our exclusion materials include galvanized hardware cloth with appropriate mesh size for the coastal environment, sheet metal flashing for larger gap closures, and two-component foam used in combination with hardware cloth where needed. We do not use poison baiting as part of our exclusion service.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY

A typical Santa Monica single-family home takes a few hours for thorough exclusion work. Our crew works primarily on the exterior of the home and in the attic and crawl space. At completion, we walk you through all sealed entry points.

How do I know if I have rats in my Santa Monica attic?

Common signs include scratching or movement sounds overhead at night, a persistent ammonia-like odor, visible droppings near the roofline or in the attic, gnaw marks on wood or wiring, and disturbed or damaged insulation.

Does salt air affect how long rat-proofing materials last?

Yes. Corrosion from salt air is a real factor in coastal Santa Monica, particularly for metal exclusion materials. We select corrosion-resistant materials appropriate for the coastal environment and recommend periodic re-inspection.

Will rat proofing stop all rodent entry?

A thorough exclusion seals all identified entry points at the time of service. Homes continue to age, and new gaps can develop over time, particularly in a salt air environment where corrosion is ongoing. Periodic re-inspection is recommended.

Do you handle attic cleanup as part of rat proofing?

Yes. Attic cleaning, sanitization, and insulation replacement are offered as a coordinated service with rat proofing.
