Rat proofing and pest control are different services. Pest control manages the population currently inside the home. Rat proofing addresses the building envelope to prevent new entry. Without exclusion work, trapping and baiting do not produce a permanent solution because new rodents will enter through the same openings.
In coastal Santa Monica, the exclusion materials used for rat proofing need to be selected with corrosion resistance in mind. Standard galvanized hardware cloth is appropriate for most applications, but for homes very close to the water where salt air exposure is highest, we select materials that hold up better in that environment.
Our exclusion materials include galvanized hardware cloth with appropriate mesh size for the coastal environment, sheet metal flashing for larger gap closures, and two-component foam used in combination with hardware cloth where needed. We do not use poison baiting as part of our exclusion service.
