Rat proofing is distinct from pest control. Licensed pest control operators handle population management through bait and trap programs. Exclusion focuses on the physical barrier. In California, companies that perform structural pest control exclusion work may operate under different licensing depending on the services they combine. Identified entry points are sealed using materials appropriate to the location. Hardware cloth mesh (galvanized 1/4-inch) is used for vent openings and larger gaps. Steel wool combined with caulk or foam is used for penetrations and smaller gaps. Sheet metal flashing is used for roofline and eave connections where structural sealing is required. We do not use plastic mesh, foam alone, or any material that a determined rodent can chew through.
After sealing, we re-inspect the exterior to confirm all identified points are addressed.
All sealing materials are chosen for durability and rodent resistance. Galvanized hardware cloth does not corrode and cannot be chewed. Sheet metal flashing at eave and roofline connections provides a permanent seal. All materials are appropriate for exterior exposure in the Chatsworth climate.
A standard Chatsworth rat-proofing project takes a few hours depending on the size and complexity of the home. Homes with complex rooflines, multiple additions, or significant hillside exposure may take longer. Most of the work is exterior. You do not need to vacate the home.

The most common entry points are gaps at the roofline where the roof deck meets the fascia or soffit, deteriorated or unscreened gable vents, plumbing and HVAC penetrations that were not sealed at installation, foundation vent screens that have failed, and gaps at utility entry points. Roof rats are excellent climbers and routinely access homes from trees and utility lines.
If there are active rats inside the home at the time exclusion is performed, population management through trapping may be needed to clear the interior before the exclusion is complete. In most cases where exclusion is done proactively, it is not needed alongside it. We will advise based on what the inspection reveals.
