Pure Eco installs blown-in insulation throughout Northridge. We specify the right material, install according to Climate Zone 9 recommendations, and document the results for LADWP rebate applications.

Blown-in insulation is the most practical and effective way to bring a Northridge home’s attic to the performance level the climate demands. The neighborhood’s houses, built primarily from the 1960s through the 1980s, were insulated to standards that fall well short of current Climate Zone 9 requirements. The homes that underwent repairs after the 1994 earthquake often had structural work done without any corresponding insulation upgrade. And the decades that have passed since either the original construction or the post-earthquake repairs have allowed whatever insulation is in place to compress, settle, and, in many cases, become contaminated. Blown-in insulation addresses all of this with a single installation that fills the full attic floor uniformly, regardless of framing configuration or existing material condition.

WHY NORTHRIDGE SPECIFICALLY NEEDS BLOWN-IN INSULATION

The case for blown-in in Northridge is both thermal and practical. On the thermal side, the interior Valley heat loads that Northridge faces from June through October demand attic insulation performing at R-49, not the R-11 to R-19 that most uninspected homes from this era are actually delivering. On the practical side, the attic configurations in the 1960s and 1970s construction that dominate this neighborhood, with their varied joist spacing, numerous penetrations from decades of system updates, and occasional post-earthquake modification, are better served by blown-in material that fills completely than by batts that rely on precise sizing to each framing cavity.

The earthquake history also makes blown-in the more resilient choice going forward. Homes in earthquake-prone areas experience minor movement and settling that can gradually displace batt insulation from its installed position over the years. Blown-in material settles uniformly and does not develop the gaps and voids that open up in batt systems after structural movement.

For homeowners who had earthquake repairs done but did not address insulation at that time, a blown-in upgrade now completes the renovation work that began in 1994. It also unlocks LADWP rebates that were unavailable or unknown at the time.

WHAT NORTHRIDGE HOMEOWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BLOWN-IN INSULATION

Northridge is in LADWP territory. LADWP offers residential energy efficiency rebates for qualifying insulation upgrades. Blown-in projects that bring the attic to program-required R-value levels may qualify. Current rebate amounts, eligibility, and application procedures are at ladwp.com. We provide documentation of the installed R-value and materials needed for the application.

Climate Zone 9 requires a minimum of R-38. We recommend R-49 for Northridge. Most homes from the 1960s through 1980s that have never been upgraded are performing at R-19 or below, and in many cases significantly lower.

Blown-in installation does not typically require a building permit in the City of Los Angeles jurisdiction. Projects combined with other scopes are assessed individually.

WHAT THE SERVICE INVOLVES

We inspect the attic fully before installation. We check insulation depth and condition, look for rodent activity or moisture damage, verify ventilation, and identify any preparation work needed. If existing insulation is contaminated, we recommend removal first. We seal ceiling penetrations before installing new material, then blow in to the target depth across the full attic floor. We verify depth and document the installed R-value before closing the attic.

MATERIALS USED

We use blown-in cellulose or fiberglass depending on attic conditions. Cellulose is the standard choice for most Northridge attics, with its Class 1 fire rating, resistance to settling, and appropriate performance profile for the Valley heat range. Fiberglass blown-in where conditions favor it. We install to the depth required for the specified R-value and do not round down.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY

Installation takes a few hours for a prepped Northridge attic. Combined removal and installation projects take longer. Hose equipment connects from the truck through the attic access, minimizing interior disruption. Documentation of the installed R-value is provided after completion.

Is blown-in appropriate for Northridge homes that were repaired after the 1994 earthquake?

Yes. Blown-in insulation is particularly well suited to homes that have undergone structural modifications because it completely fills around updated framing and penetrations without requiring precise sizing for each cavity. It also performs well in attics that may experience minor ongoing settling from seismic activity.

What R-value does my Northridge attic need?

R-38 minimum, R-49 recommended for Climate Zone 9. Most uninspected Northridge homes from the 1960s to 1980s are performing well below this range.

Can blown-in go over existing insulation?

Yes, if the existing material is clean, dry, and structurally intact. Contaminated or degraded material should be removed first.

How long does blown-in insulation last in a Northridge attic?

Blown-in insulation lasts 15 to 30 years or more in a clean attic. The Valley heat does not degrade properly installed blown-in material. Rodent activity and moisture are the primary factors that shorten insulation life.
