Southern California is often described as "dry" but indoor humidity here swings much more than most homeowners realize. Winter mornings can be pleasantly moderate. Then a Santa Ana wind event blows through and indoor humidity drops into the teens — dryer than Phoenix in August. That kind of swing dries skin, cracks wood floors, cracks HVAC-adjacent materials, and stresses everyone in the house who has any respiratory sensitivity. The good news: it's fixable, cheaply, if you know what you're targeting.
What indoor humidity should be
The industry-standard comfort range is 30–50% relative humidity. Below 30% you get dryness symptoms — static electricity, cracked lips, sinus irritation, wood shrinkage. Above 60% you get moisture problems — condensation on cold surfaces, dust-mite proliferation, mold risk. The 40–45% target is the sweet spot for most SoCal homes.
Why SoCal indoor humidity crashes
Two forces push indoor humidity down in our climate:
- Santa Ana wind events — hot, dry air masses from the Great Basin push outdoor humidity into single digits. Any air that infiltrates the house arrives bone-dry.
- Winter heating — a gas furnace warms cold outdoor air, dropping its relative humidity as it heats. What was 40% outside at 45°F becomes 15% at 72°F.
Homes with leaky envelopes suffer the most: they're constantly diluting whatever indoor humidity you have with dry outdoor air. Envelope sealing helps here too, same as with everything else.
What low humidity actually does
- Dry skin, chapped lips, cracked nails. Common in January and September in LA.
- Sinus irritation and dry cough. Sensitive individuals notice within hours.
- Static electricity everywhere. Reliable indicator that humidity is under 30%.
- Hardwood floor gaps. Wood shrinks as it loses moisture. Sustained low humidity can produce visible gaps between planks.
- Musical instruments and wood furniture suffer the most — joints loosen, finishes crack.
- Increased respiratory infection susceptibility. Dry mucous membranes are less effective barriers.
Fixes, cheapest to biggest
Passive sources ($0–$30)
Houseplants, open bowls of water on radiators, aquariums, showering with the bathroom door open. Small effect but non-zero and free. Not enough on their own in a large home during a Santa Ana event.
Portable humidifiers ($40–$200 per unit)
Best pick for bedrooms. Runs while you sleep, keeps that one room comfortable. Refill daily during dry stretches. Clean per manufacturer instructions — a neglected humidifier reservoir grows biological gunk you then breathe.
Whole-house humidifier ($500–$1,500 installed)
Mounts to your HVAC supply plenum and adds humidity to the air the system is already moving. One reservoir tied to the plumbing, no refills, one setpoint on the thermostat or a dedicated humidistat. Best long-term solution for a whole home. Requires HVAC that's compatible and plumbing access.
How not to over-humidify
Adding humidity is only useful up to about 50% RH. Push past 55% and you start creating moisture problems — condensation on windows in the morning, damp spots in cold corners, perfect conditions for dust mites. In our climate, over-humidifying is rare (the outdoor air keeps pulling humidity down) but it's a real risk in tightly sealed homes with aggressive humidifier settings.
