Attic fans vs. whole-house fans

A whole-house fan is not an attic fan. Whole-house fans sit in a central ceiling (rarely a wall) and push indoor air up into the attic. Attic fans pick up where that leaves off — exhausting the heat the whole-house fan moved upstairs.

An attic fan can work without a whole-house fan. The reverse is risky: constantly pushing hot air into an attic with no controlled exhaust can drive attic temperatures toward 150°F or even near 200°F. Used together, they cool more than the attic alone.

A complete attic ventilation system needs both fans and vents. Ridge vents at the peak let moist, hot air escape naturally.
