How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Filter?

Every 60–90 days for a 1-inch filter, longer for 4–5 inch media filters. What actually shortens filter life, why the wrong MERV rating stresses your blower, and how to check without guessing.

The right HVAC filter cadence for a typical Southern California home is every 60–90 days for a 1-inch pleated filter, and every 6–12 months for a deep 4–5 inch media filter. Households with pets, allergies, or exposure to wildfire smoke should check monthly and swap sooner. The single most common cause of an expensive summer HVAC repair in our service area is a filter that was ignored — a clogged filter starves the blower, freezes the evaporator, and cascades into a service call that costs 30× what the filter would have. Get the cadence right and most of the rest takes care of itself.

How to check a filter honestly

Pull the filter out. Hold it up to any bright light source — a sunny window, a bare lightbulb, a phone flashlight. If you can see light through it clearly, it's good. If it's a hazy gray that partially blocks the light, it's overdue. If it's a solid gray-black wall, it's very overdue and your system has been running restricted for weeks.

What actually shortens filter life

  • Pets — hair and dander load the filter fast. Cut standard cadence in half.
  • Wildfire smoke — a single week of heavy smoke can effectively use a full 60-day cycle.
  • Construction or remodeling — even in adjacent parts of the house, drywall dust wrecks filters. Replace after any dusty project.
  • Long-run cooling season — SoCal summers with lots of AC hours load filters faster than winter.
  • Basement/crawlspace-mounted systems — proximity to damp or dusty spaces adds particulates.
  • High occupancy — more people = more airborne debris.

Match the MERV to your blower

The temptation is to buy the highest-MERV filter on the shelf, assuming higher is always better. It isn't. Higher-MERV filters create more static pressure on the blower. Older PSC (permanent split capacitor) blowers can struggle above MERV 11. Modern ECM (electronically commutated motor) blowers can handle MERV 13 or higher without issue.

Rule of thumb: MERV 11 is safe on almost any residential system. MERV 13 is a smart upgrade for homes with allergies or smoke concerns, on any modern ECM blower. MERV 15–16 requires confirmation from a technician — worth the check for the improvement in filtration.

What happens when a filter clogs

Airflow drops. The evaporator coil (indoor part of the AC) doesn't get enough warm air across it. The refrigerant temperature drops below freezing. Condensate that was going to drain harmlessly instead freezes on the coil, quickly turning the whole coil into a block of ice. The system now:

  1. Runs continuously without cooling the house
  2. Stresses the compressor (running against a frozen coil is hard on it)
  3. May trip a safety shutoff on the compressor overload
  4. Once shut down, floods the drip pan when the ice melts, potentially damaging the ceiling below (for attic-installed systems)

All from a $15 filter. This is the single most common preventable service call we run in July and August.

4–5 inch media filters — worth the upgrade?

For homes that will accept the upfront install cost, a dedicated 4–5 inch media filter cabinet is a real upgrade:

  • Much larger filter surface area → less pressure drop, less blower strain
  • 6–12 month change intervals
  • MERV 13–16 without struggling
  • Cleaner air, longer equipment life, less filter waste

Downside: install cost (a cabinet retrofit runs $300–$800) and slightly more expensive filter stock. Payback is 3–5 years on filter cost alone, longer on equipment life.

Set a real reminder

The single behavior that separates well-maintained systems from failed ones is a calendar reminder. Every 60 days. If the filter looks fine, great, put it back and reset the reminder. If it doesn't, you catch it before it becomes an emergency.

FAQ

Can I go longer than 90 days on a filter? +

In a household with no pets, no smokers, no wildfire exposure, and low occupancy, a good 1-inch pleated filter can sometimes stretch to 4 months. That's the exception, not the rule. Check it monthly; hold it up to a light — if you can't see light through it, replace regardless of calendar.

Does a higher MERV filter cost more to run? +

A high-MERV filter creates more static pressure on the blower, which makes the blower work harder and uses slightly more electricity. Usually a modest increase — 1–3% on blower energy. Bigger concern is whether your specific HVAC can handle the higher pressure without cutting airflow.

Should I use a permanent/washable filter? +

Reusable electrostatic filters have a place but are typically MERV 6–8 equivalent — fine for dust but weak for allergens and no help with smoke. For most SoCal homes, a disposable pleated MERV 11–13 changed on schedule outperforms a permanent filter.

Do I need a filter for each air return? +

Whichever return grille (or filter cabinet) is in your system's design — that's where the filter lives. Some homes have one central return; others have multiple. If yours has more than one, filter each one.
