Attic Insulation R-Value Explained

R-value is heat-flow resistance. SoCal attics want R-30 minimum, R-38 as the default, R-49 for colder inland zones. Here's what those numbers really mean — and where 'more' stops being 'better.'

R-value is a material's resistance to heat flow — higher number, better insulator. In Southern California, the California Energy Commission recommends a minimum of R-30 in attics, though most modern re-insulation projects target R-38 for the best cost-to-performance balance. Colder inland climates (Riverside foothills, Chatsworth in a January freeze) can justify R-49. Wall assemblies land between R-13 and R-24 depending on cavity depth and climate zone. The number matters, but so does the install — even the best-rated material bleeds performance if the attic isn't air-sealed first.

What R-value actually measures

R-value quantifies how effectively a material resists conductive heat transfer. It's the ratio of temperature difference across the insulation to the heat flow through it, at steady state. A higher R-value means more resistance — less heat crossing the barrier in either direction. In summer, that means less attic heat radiating into your ceilings. In winter, it means less furnace heat escaping through the roof.

R-value is additive within an assembly. Two inches of a material rated R-6 per inch = R-12 total. An R-38 attic can be achieved with 12 inches of loose-fill fiberglass (roughly R-3.2/inch), 10 inches of blown-in cellulose (R-3.7/inch), or 5.5 inches of closed-cell spray foam (R-7/inch). Same R-38 target, different depths.

SoCal-specific R-value targets

  • Attic — R-30 minimum (Title 24 / CEC guidance for SoCal climate zones). Below R-30, you'll feel the summer heat and see it on your bill.
  • Attic — R-38 default. Our standard for a full re-insulation. Best cost-to-performance point for the LA basin, San Fernando Valley, and Long Beach.
  • Attic — R-49 for colder inland zones. Parts of the Inland Empire and higher elevations see cold enough winters to justify the extra depth.
  • Exterior walls — R-13 (2×4 framing) to R-21 (2×6 framing). Most SoCal homes built after 1978 are already there.
  • Crawl-space floors — R-19 to R-25. Often overlooked and often undersized.

Why air sealing multiplies R-value

R-value only tells you how well a material resists conductive heat transfer — the kind that moves through a solid, molecule to molecule. It doesn't account for convective heat loss — air leaking through gaps around light fixtures, top plates, plumbing chases, and ceiling penetrations. An unsealed R-38 attic can perform closer to R-19 in real-world conditions because so much conditioned air is bleeding out (and unconditioned attic air is bleeding in) through leaks the insulation can't stop.

Diminishing returns above R-38 in SoCal

Going from R-13 (a badly insulated 1970s attic) to R-30 is a huge win — the biggest single step in comfort and cost you can take short of new windows. Going from R-30 to R-38 is another meaningful step. Going from R-38 to R-49 is a smaller step, and mostly worth it in colder climates. Going from R-49 to R-60 in an LA-basin attic is almost never worth the marginal cost.

The reason is physics. Each additional R-unit gives a diminishing improvement in heat transfer, following a 1/R curve. Doubling from R-19 to R-38 cuts heat loss almost in half. Doubling from R-38 to R-76 only cuts the remaining loss in half — a much smaller absolute number, and by then the leakiest paths in your envelope (windows, doors, ducts) are dominating.

How to know your current R-value

You can eyeball an attic's approximate R-value by depth:

  • 3–4 inches of loose fiberglass ≈ R-13 (badly under-insulated)
  • 6–7 inches ≈ R-19 (Title 24 minimum for pre-1978 homes)
  • 10–12 inches ≈ R-30 (SoCal minimum recommendation)
  • 13–15 inches ≈ R-38 (target)
  • 17–19 inches ≈ R-49

That's rough — actual R-value depends on the material and how compressed it is. An in-attic inspection with a Pure Eco technician gets you a real measured number in about 20 minutes.

What to ask a contractor before you sign

  1. What material and what R-value are you installing?
  2. How many inches deep will that be, at what installed density?
  3. Is air sealing included, and if so, at what scope?
  4. Are we removing the existing insulation first, or layering?
  5. What manufacturer warranty comes with the material?

FAQ

What R-value do I need for my attic in Los Angeles? +

The California Energy Commission recommends R-30 as the minimum for SoCal attics. Pure Eco installs R-38 as our default full-attic re-insulation, which is comfortably above the minimum and hits the sweet spot on cost vs performance. Colder inland zones can call for R-49.

Can I just add more insulation on top of what's already there? +

Sometimes. If the existing insulation is clean, dry, and simply too thin, layering blown-in on top can work. If it's contaminated (rodents, water, mold) or crushed and matted, layering just seals in the problem — a full removal + re-insulation is the honest path.

Does R-value keep working forever? +

The material's rated R-value doesn't degrade in normal conditions. What can degrade is the installation: settling (some blown-in materials settle 5–10% over their life), moisture damage, rodent tunneling, or crushed batts. R-38 installed correctly stays R-38 for decades.

Is more R-value always better? +

There's a point of diminishing returns. Going from R-13 (a bad attic) to R-30 is a huge comfort and cost win. Going from R-38 to R-60 in a SoCal climate is a small marginal gain for a large marginal cost. R-38 is the sweet spot for most homes in our service area.
